Section 1. Do We Match?

DNA by the numbers:  We now have two Gedmatch numbers: 

1. Jack Montague: A403529 

2. Molly Montague Fisher: WE3782584

If you know about DNA and have taken the DNA test, we can cut to the chase.  Are we related is the question.  A free service you can use to test both our DNA samples is found in GEDmatch.  It is a free service but you have to upload your DNA to GEDmatch.  Establish an account with GEDmatch and follow their instructions on uploading your DNA to their site.  Record the number GEDmatch gives you for your DNA sample.  You will need that to compare to other samples.  Once you have uploaded your DNA you can do a one to one test comparing our samples.  You need to know my DNA test number to compare to. We now have two Gedmatch numbers:

Molly Montague Fisher: WE3782584

Our Ancestry family tree number is 7330861. If you are a member, check it out! Once you do this let us know if you are related.   We have much to talk about. Also, John and Molly’s DNA tests are located at www.ancestry.com.  If you used ancestry to do your DNA test you will be notified if some elements of our samples match.  We are not pushing ancestry.  There are a lot of good testing companies out there.  We used ancestry because of its genealogical reach.We have found several relatives through these matching processes.  It has been fun!

Section 2. Can We Match Family Trees?

Again, let’s use GEDmatch to compare trees.  Like the DNA test, you have to upload your tree into GEDmatch from another source.  We used ancestry to do this but there are a lot of options to create a GEDCOM file to upload to GEDmatch.  Simple google GEDCOM files and you will get a host of options.  Once you have your tree in GEDmatch you can compare to ours.  Our tree number is 7330861.  If you use ancestry you can look up our tree there.  The name is MontaguesofDerry just like our website.

Section 3. Ancestry DNA Results

We have three Ancestry pie charts based on DNA for three family members Jack/John and Molly are siblings. John Montague IV is Jack's son. As of February 2019 Jack’s DNA results have been updated. Why did the estimate change? We have better tools for telling regions apart, especially closely related regions like Ireland and Great Britain. We also have 16,000 reference samples now instead of 3,000, which helps screen out less-likely regions. So here are the changes:

Ireland/Scotland/Wales 93%    Increased by 11%

Great Britain 4%                           Decreased by 1%

Sweden 3%                                    Refined from: Scandinavia 6%

The 93% Irish doesn’t come as a surprise though the 3% Sweden does.  If you recall from early sections in this book, there are many explanations, some more fanciful than others, about the derivation of the name and where we “originally” came from.

This chart shows Donegal, which we suspect is the place that the Nicholsons came from and Ulster which is where the McTeagues are from.

This chart shows North Central Ulster, North Ulster, and Maghera Ireland. Our research concurs!
