Section 1.  Peter McTeague (1872) and Family, Son of Patrick (1837)

Peter was the youngest son born to Patrick (1837) and Catherine (Kitty) Kelley McTeague in County Derry Ireland.  Patrick was the son of James McTeague born 1797 and Sarah Kelley born 1798.  Here is their family tree in Ireland:

 Here is Peter’s birth registry:

Section 2. Explanation of Numbering Scheme

Please note the SKM1 above Patrick McTeague’s block above page 1.  Patrick McTeague is the son of Sarah Kelly and James McTeague who are the second oldest ancestors we know of in Ireland.  James did have a brother John.  John McTeague was born in 1795 and married Bridget Mallon.  John was 2 years older than James.  Similarly, Hugh was the second child born to Sarah Kelly and James McTeague.  Their first son, Patrick, was born in 1837 and he will be identified as SKM1 while High is identified as SKM2.

You will see each succeeding generation carries this identification number in the top left corner.  As a generation is added a number or letter is added to that generation followed by a period.  If you count from right to left you will know the number of generations back to SKM Sarah Kelly and James McTeague.   And you will always get back to SKM Sarah Kelly and James McTeague.

Section 3. Peter Immigrates to the USA

Peter left Ireland for the USA in 1884 according to the 1910 USA census and in 1887 in the 1930 census.     We are doubtful of either of these dates since he would have been either 12 or 15 years old.  We found one potential match immigration record:  Peter Montague age 16 born about 1871 in England arrived in Philadelphia 3 May 1887 aboard the British Princess.  We doubt this is Peter based on English birth and last county being England.  Still the other dates are close.  We could not find a record of Peter’s immigration through Castle Garden in New York. This seems rather a young age for a trip across the ocean into unchartered land unless accompanied by someone on the trip and they made living arrangements for him once he arrived.  We do not know who that was.  Peter does not show up in a USA census until 1910.  Where he was from 1884 or 1887 to 1910 we do not know.  We suspect he was in Chicago for at least part of that time where he developed lasting friendships with many of the Chicago Montagues. Peter was naturalized in May 1916 in the Northern District of California District Court (San Francisco)

 Section 4. The Chicago Question

How is Peter linked to the Chicago Montague’s?  There are too many coincidences for there not to be a connection.  The question starts with: where is Peter from the time of his immigration in 1884/7 until the birth of his son Ralph P. Montague in 1907 in San Francisco.

We think he is in Chicago based on the following:

1.  Peter is 12 or 15 years old when he immigrates-who did he come over with?

2.  Did he stay with Thomas Montague in Chicago Illinois?   In the 1900 census Thomas Montague and Catherine S Montague are living in Hyde Park in Chicago Illinois.  Thomas was born in Northern Ireland in March 1866 and he immigrates to the USA in 1896. His wife Catherine S Montague (maiden name Sheehan) was born September 18, 1870 in Ireland and immigrated to the USA in 1895 (There is a difference in immigration dates reported in different census’s).  Thomas and Catherine married in 1899.  In 1923, Thomas Montague passes away.
