Section 1. Hugh’s Parents and Grandparents

Some members of this family spread their wings far and wide.  Indeed to two other continents including Australia and North America.  Some stayed in Scotland others went to Germany and Canada.  It is not a far trip from County Derry Ireland to Glasgow Scotland and two of Hugh McTeague’s children made that trip.  Two that we know of.

Ann McTeague, the first child to Hugh and Peggy O’Connor, born in 1871, decided to make that trip and departed Ireland after marrying in 1898 to William Taylor.  They left Ireland after they married and before 1901.  They settled in Glasgow, Scotland and raised their family.

Shortly after, Ann’s younger Brother Hugh, born in 1877, decided to go to Scotland.  We are not sure exactly when Hugh left but it was sometime between 1902 and 1907. Shown to the left is a picture of Hugh circa 1940.  He married Ellen Toal in 1907 in Glasgow.  Ellen was born and raised in Ireland.  They lived their lives and raised their family in Springburn, a section of Glasgow.  Likely, Hugh and Ann stayed in close contact.  Anyone have any pictures of the two families getting together? This is Hugh and Ellen’s story/genealogy.  If you can add to the story please tell us and we will include that information.

This is the lineage of Hugh Montague who was born on March 21, 1877 in Cahore or Dysart, County Derry Ireland. He immigrated to Scotland and all succeeding generations in this chapter are born in Scotland.  Here is what we know of Hugh (1877):

Section 2. Explanation of Numbering Scheme

Please note the letters and numbers above the left corner of each block on the left.  This numbering scheme identified a specific person in a specific generation. If you read these numbers from right to left you will eventually get back to James and Sarah Kelly McTeague-SKM.  They are the oldest generation we know of in Ireland.  Their son Hugh is the second born child-SKM2.  And Hugh’s son Hugh is his 10th born child-SKM2.j.  The good news is the branches of this family are long and many and the bad news is it is easy to get lost in those branches.  Using this numbering scheme will hopefully help you identify where you are in those long branches.

Section 3. Proximity of Scotland to Ireland

The map shows the proximity of Ireland and Scotland.  It was not unheard of for Irish farmers to go to Scotland during the harvest period to seek employment and return to Ireland.  There is a suggestion that Hugh (1877) did this several times before deciding to stay in Scotland.  Hugh (1877) settled in Glasgow. If you look at Belfast in Ireland and Glasgow in Scotland, a journey by water is relatively fast with combined steam and sail ships. Over eight million men, women and children emigrated from Ireland between 1801 and 1921 as a result of the effects of famine, economic depression, changes in inheritance patterns and a general movement from rural to urban areas. Approximately 8% of these came to Scotland. The name Montague seems to be used from the time the McTeagues came over to Scotland.

This may simply be a mispronunciation or a deliberate attempt on Hugh’s (1877) part to hide his Irish Catholic heritage due to the ill feelings in the British Isles for all the “immigrants.” Note:  Thanks to the wonders of the internet, we met Traci and Jacqui Montague-our cousins in Scotland!  How you ask?  The website www.rootsweb.com has a section for posting on a bulletin board that everyone can look at.  We posted a very brief description of the family in Ireland.  About 10 years later we got a reply from Jacqui and soon thereafter her sister Traci.  We have been exchanging information and sharing emails ever since.

Section 4.  Hugh Montague (SKM2.j) Siblings

Hugh’s father Hugh (SKM2) was married twice and had 13 children. He was a shoemaker/farmer and he was a Catholic.  He resided in Cahore and married Mary Mellan on January 30, 1857 and Margaret O’Connor on October 27, 1870 in Plumbridge, County Tyrone.  Mary Mellan was born in 1830 and died January 31, 1870 at the age of 40.  Margaret O'Connor was born in 1842 and died on May 13, 1896 at age 54 in Cahore Ireland.

Hugh's (SKM2) children with Mary Mellon were:

SKM2.a Catherine (Kate) Montague born Nov 23, 1857. Baptismal sponsors were Pat McTeague and Alice Mellan.  We understand the sponsors to be Hugh’s brother Patrick and Mary’s sister Alice.  Catherine immigrated to the USA in 1881 through the Port of Philadelphia.  -See Immigration tab Catherine Montague Meighan.   Catherine would go on to have 7 children.

SKM2.b James (Jamey) Montague born Dec 3, 1859; he died in Ireland in 1897 at age 38.  He was baptized on December 28, 1859 and his Sponsors were: Patrick Moran and Mary McWilliams.  We found a death registration for a James Montague born 1859 and died at age 30 about Apr-June 1889 in Londonderry Vol 2, page 146 film number 101595. We are not sure if this is James.   Can you provide any information?

SKM2.c John Montague born October 11, 1861 in Disart.  Baptismal Sponsors were Daniel

McGready and Catherine McTeague. John immigrated to the USA; died January 12, 1898 at age 37 in an accident. We are unsure when he immigrated. John would go on to have 3 children.

Click here for more information on Immigrant John: https://www.montaguesofderry.com/immigration/immigrant-john

SKM2.d Patrick Montague baptized September 4, 1863 in Disart.  The Baptismal sponsors were Cormick McEldowney and Alice Mellan.  Patrick immigrated to the USA April 25, 1883-See Immigration tab Patrick Montague.   Patrick would go on to have 6 children.     SKM2.e Joseph Montague born December 5, 1865 in Draperstown and baptized December 6,

1865 in Disart.  The sponsors were Samuel Toland and Alice Kiny.  Joseph immigrated to the USA June 16, 1887. Click here for more information on Immigrant Joseph: https://www.montaguesofderry.com/immigration/immigrant-joseph. Joseph would go on to have 10 children.

SKM2.f Mary McTeague was born Nov 8, 1867 in Magherafelt, Draperstown according to Film Number 101155 and died in Ireland at age 26 in June 1894.  She did go to the USA but returned to Ireland.  We found a departure record for a Mary J Montague age 25 born about 1867 departed 9 September 1892 for the port of New York aboard the Furnessia in the Anchor line from the port of Londonderry. Also, another departure record for Mary Montague born about 1866 aboard the Circassia from the port of Londonderry to the port of New York departing 11 September 1891.  We could not find a return trip to Ireland.  We also found a confirming birth record for Mary McTeague born 8 Nov 1867 in Derry to parents Hugh McTeague and Mary Mellon film number 101155.

We know very little about James and Mary.

Hugh's (SKM2) children with Margaret O'Connor were:

SKM2.g Anne McTeague was baptized December 16, 1871.  Sponsors were James McKay and Margaret Kelley. Ann also relocated to Glasgow Scotland and married William Taylor on November 12, 1898 in Moneymore, County Derry Ireland.  They lived at 133 Balornock Road in Glasgow, Scotland.  Ann died in 1938.  We could not find Ann McTeague or Ann Taylor in the 1901 census in County Derry.  It appears they left for Scotland in 1901.   They had 3 children. No doubt Ann’s family and Hugh were close One of Anne McTeague Taylor’s grandchildren, Mary Carr (SKM2.g.2.d) moved to Sydney Australia!  Her descendants are still there.

SKM2.h Sara McTeague was baptized July 1873.  Sponsors were Edward McKay and Margaret Kelley.

SKM2.i Susan McTeague was baptized June 6, 1875.  Sponsors were John Gallagher and Susan Hagan.  Susan married Ed Bradley and eventually relocated to Beacon NY where her 8 children had relocated.  We have a separate chapter on Susan and her family.

SKM2.j Hugh Montague was born March 21, 1877—he immigrated to Scotland. This chapter is about this Hugh and his family.

SKM2.k Ellen Mary McTeague was baptized September 24, 1879.   Sponsors were John Kelley and Sarah Moran.

SKM2.l Frank McTeague was born July 1881

SKM2.m Rose McTeague was baptized June 11, 1884.  Sponsors were Patrick Toland and Mary McVeigh.

We know very little about Sara, Ellen Mary, Frank and Rose.  We do not know if they stayed in the Draperstown area or if they relocated somewhere else.  Can you help?
